The 2,700-hectare whenua of Waikene Station is located in the heart of the Seaward Kaikoura Range and was acquired by the Summerton whānau in 2010.

The Summerton’s aim to develop, enhance and preserve the property in a diverse and sustainable way. The legacy of Waikene is based on a strong sense of duty and care to preserve the cultural, environmental and ecological legacy of the land for future generations. Their commitment to kaitiakitanga and ensuring the whenua is well maintained and protected includes : research into retirement of marginal land across both indigenous and non indigenous forests; development of sustainable land management principles; engagement, collaboration and project alignment with mana whenua related properties such as establishment of private access rights for Ngāi Tahu (Tukutuku Iwi); investment in fencing, land retirement and waterways management projects.

The business is undertaking significant afforestation projects prioritising native plants to optimise land use in addition to Mānuka production. The sale of carbon credits supports afforestation, erosion and water quality initiatives on a financial and practical level.

Carbon credits provide a sustainable commercial driver that supports the Summerton’s continued progress in their vision for the property by allowing them to gradually move away from traditional farming options.
